What happens to a personal injury claim during a pandemic?

Life is difficult for people who have been injured or who have lost a loved one in a motor vehicle crash. The coronavirus pandemic has further complicated matters for those who were pursuing personal injury claims in Mecklenburg County.

Chief Justice Cheri Beasley recently issued new orders clarifying North Carolina court operations. “Court is going to look different for a while,” Beasley said, adding that some court proceedings will resume in-person and others will be heard online.

Two parts of her recent order could have special significance for those who have pending or potential personal injury claims:

  • Beasley extended the postponement of jury trials until July 1
  • Her order also stated that “filings and actions due in civil matters that had been previously extended are due June 1”

If you have a pending or potential personal injury claim that could be affected by any aspect of the order, contact your attorney to discuss details.

If you have been recently injured and don’t yet have a lawyer, it’s vital to secure legal representation, even during a pandemic that has delayed some aspects of the court system. In that way, critical filing deadlines will be taken care of by your attorney, and negotiations with insurers can begin that could result in a beneficial settlement for you and your family.

It’s also important to note that if you have been recently injured, our law firm is accepting new personal injury claims. We are scheduling safe consultations that begin the process of getting you the compensation you deserve and any ongoing medical treatment you will need.
