Medical Payments (Medpay) Coverage in your Automobile Insurance Policy

Medical Payments Coverage (Medpay) is included in most automobile insurance policies but few people even know it is there or what it is. Medpay is an optional coverage, but because it is so expensive, most insurance agents automatically include it with your insurance premium.

What is Medpay?

Medpay is similar to a small health insurance policy. Generally, the limits are between $500 and $5,000 and the premium for Medpay is only a few dollars more. The purpose of Medpay is to reimburse you for any medical expenses you incur as a result of being injured by someone else in an automobile accident. You can get reimbursed for these expenses even if the bills have been paid by your own health insurance company or the insurance carrier of the person who caused the wreck in which you were injured.

You have an absolute right to have these benefits and an attorney may not ethically charge you a percentage of the recovery to obtain these benefits for you. You may recover for any medical bills related to the accident for up to one year following the crash.

Although it is more rare, some insurance companies will also offer a small life insurance policy as part of your automobile insurance policy.

You should make an inquiry with your agent about this supplemental coverage. We highly recommend to at least obtain some level of Medpay coverage.
